Port Blair, Oct. 8: A& N Police have arrested two more persons on Tuesday in connection with poaching in Jarawa area in Kadamtala, bringing the total to five (5) such accused in last two days.  Swapan Biswas (25) and Suresh Xaxa (26) were absconding from Kadamtala since the registration of case against them on Saturday (05/10/2013). They were apprehended from Mayabunder area by a Police team led by SHO PS Kadamtala.

The accused persons have been booked in Crime no. 31/13, dated 05/10/13, u/s 7/8/ (2) (5) (6) of PAT Regulation, 1956 which prescribes stringent punishment of imprisonment upto 7 years. They will be produced in Court on Wednesday. Further investigation is on.

Port Blair/ New Delhi, Oct. 7:  Indian junior riders made a sensational start to their campaign in the Track Asia Cycling Championship in Thailand by winning one gold and three silver medal on the opening day.

Teen sensation from Andaman and Nicobar, Deborah, bagged the gold medal in the Time Trial event while Manorama Devi bagged silver medals in Scratch and Point races and Dilawar Singh from Haryana added the third silver in Point race for India.

The Indian contingent has been taking big strides in Asian cycling ever since the last edition of the Asian championship in New Delhi in March, where India won two silver and two bronze for the first time ever.

The performance of the Indian contingent had even attracted the Korean Cycling Federation, who had invited both Deborah and Manorama Devi to train with their national squad before this championship.

"Indian cycling has been on the rise and these results are very encouraging for all of us. These players have put in a lot of hard work in the last few months and I am extremely happy that they could translate those efforts into medal," said Onkar Singh, secretary, Cycling Federation of India.

Back in the A&N Islands, the home of Deborah, the Secretary and members of Andaman & Nicobar Cycling Association have congratulated Island Cyclist Deborah for achieving Gold Medal in Time Trial (Junior Category) event for the country in the Track Asia Cup 2013 being held at Thailand.

The Secretary and members of A&N Cycling Association have appreciated the Cycling Federation of India for giving opportunity for advance coaching at South Korea, which has helped Deborah and other Cyclist for attaining Medals for the country. It is a proud moment for the Cycling Federation of India and the Andaman & Nicobar Cycling Association.

At Car Nicobar, the Island from where Deborah hails, the Captains, Village Leaders and the villagers at large have rejoiced her achievement. In a communication to Andaman Chronicle, a villager from Kakana said, “We are proud of her. May God bless her and enable her to bring more laurels to the islands”.

 

Port Blair, Oct. 3: The Hon’ble Lt Governor, Lt General (Retd) A.K. Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, yesterday paid a visit to the newly setup Andaman Nicobar Tribal Research and Training Institute (ANTRI) housed in a renovated old heritage building at H97, Main Road Haddo. The ANTRI commenced operations on 2nd October 2013, keeping to their commitment which was announced by the Hon’ble Lt Governor in his Independence Day speech on 15th August 2013. The formal inauguration is expected by the President of India during his proposed visit to the Islands during January 2014.

On the occasion the members of indigenous tribal communities and representatives of tribal Councils of Nicobar District welcomed the Lt Governor on his arrival at the Institute. Shri B. P. Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, senior officers of the Administration were present on the occasion.

A presentation on the aims and objectives of ANTRI was made before the Lt Governor by Prof. Vishvajit Pandya, Member, Research Advisory Board. The Lt Governor interacted with the newly recruited Research staff of ANTRI and AAJVS and members of Research Advisory Board, ANTRI.  

Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor described the commencement of functioning of ANTRI as a step towards developing research driven policy for the Administration towards the indigenous communities. He visualized that in the days to come ANTRI would become one of the most prestigious Tribal Research Institute in the world. He reiterated the Administration’s commitment to carry out the overall development of the Islands keeping the ecological and tribal concerns to the fore. He also reiterated that we are fully responsible and accountable to ensure the well being of our tribal population. This is a solemn commitment.  

The Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Shri B. P. Ray also spoke on the occasion and highlighted various issues.

The Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash complimented the Tribal Welfare Department and AAJVS for the momentous step to make the ANTRI functional.  He requested the Research Advisory Board to guide ANTRI to charter its course in meeting its objectives.  The Chief Engineer and the officers of APWD were appreciated for the timely completion of the renovation work of the heritage building of ANTRI. Secretary (Tribal Welfare) Shri G. Theva Neethi Dhas proposed a vote of thanks.
