Port Blair, Jan 28: Mr. Vishal Jolly, National Executive Member, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Former State President BJP-ANI, has submitted a petition to The Secretary Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for the State of Goa and UTs (“JERC”), Haryana, expressing grave concerns and strong objections regarding the proposed tariff hike outlined in Petition No. 119/2024 before the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for the State of Goa and Union Territories.

Port Blair, Jan 28: The 1st Chaturanga Smart Girl 2024 Chess Tournament, organised by Andaman Nicobar Chess Association in collaboration with SURPANJALI (a cultural art forum) under the Smart Girl Project, with an aim to encourage and empower girls, began this morning at RGT Public School, Port Blair. This chess tournament is being organised for the first time in the A&N Islands exclusively for girls. Around 130 girl chess players enthusiastically participated in the event.

Port Blair, Jan 28: The CPI (M) has expressed sorrow at the huge loss of property of a large number of shopkeepers in the devastating fire which occurred at Rangat in the night of 23rd January, 2024. In a letter dated 26th January, 2024, sent to the President/General Secretary of the Shyamsunder Temple Committee which owns the land where the shops existed, D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee has demanded to construct a modern shopping complex at the same place where the old buildings existed and allot the same to all the victim shopkeepers. He told the Temple Committee that CPI (M) will take up this matter with the A & N Administration and Banks to render all the assistance including loan, etc. to the Temple Committee for construction of the shopping complex considering the livelihood of a large number of people.  About 60 shops were gutted in the fire.   

Port Blair, Jan 28: Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the Member of Parliament of Andaman & Nicobar Islands has voiced a pressing concern regarding the absence of battery backup in BSNL mobile towers in the Shoal Bay 8 area.

Numerous residents of Shoal Bay 8 have brought to the attention of the Member of Parliament about the challenges they face due to the lack of battery backup in the BSNL mobile towers. This issue becomes particularly severe during power outages, resulting in a complete breakdown of mobile networks. Such disruptions pose a significant risk as they hinder the ability to seek help during emergencies, including fire or medical issues.
