Port Blair, March 17: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM  has approved the participation of the A&N Islands Agriculture team in the 6th Agriculture, Horticulture & Food Processing Mission to China coinciding with the 14th China (Shouguang) International Vegetable Sci-tech fair from 26th April to 2nd May 2013, at Shanghai-Shouguang-Beijing.

The 6th Agriculture, Horticulture & Food Processing Mission to China is being organized by the India China Alliance for Cooperation (ICAC), an organization which focuses on promoting Sino-India bilateral trade, investment and cultural cooperation to know more about the rapid strides in the field of agriculture and food processing. The week-long programme would be especially relevant to all those engaged in producing, processing and marketing of fruits and vegetables, post harvest technologies and organic farming.

Participation in the China fair would also give an opportunity to the officials of the Directorate of Agriculture, A&N Administration to know about the different activities involved in the processing and value addition of fruits and vegetables in which China is the leading country. The key areas of interest would be frozen and canned fruits and vegetables, green house cultivation, technology to grow, process, preservation and package, technology for seeds production, emerging technologies for agriculture equipments for sowing, harvesting and post harvest processes. The main objective of the mission would be to identify areas of Sino-Indian trade and technology cooperation in the field of Agriculture, Horticulture, Food and Meat processing.

Port Blair, March 15: Keeping up the ante against the flourishing, transhipment and sale of illicit narcotic drugs in these Islands, the Andaman & Nicobar Police has in two different seized over 6 kilos of ganja (Marijuana) and arrested 5 drug traffickers.

Both the successful raids were conducted by the anti-burglary sqad of PS Aberdeen comprising of ASI M. Abdul Rasheed, HC Sanjay Kujur, PC Rakesh Toppo, PC Ashish Mallick, PC 2636 P. Kumarswamy and PC M Raja Rao headed by Inspr. D. Jagdishwar Rao, SHO Aberdeen under the supervision of Dy. SP (South Andaman) Anyesh Roy.

In the first instance, on 6th March 2013 upon the receipt of secret information that ganja is being brought to these islands through a reputed courier service, a trap was laid and the accused person, Jitender Narayan 35 years, R/o Dollygunj was caught red handed with 3.895 Kgs of illicit ganja. On the basis of information obtained during his interrogation, the main traffickers involved in the racket, one Sameer Shil (49) yrs. R/o Shanikhari was also apprehended by Aberdeen Police.

On 11th March 2013 in another successful operation undertaken on the basis of secret information, two ladies Madhabi Mondal, 30 years, a DRM in APWD Bird Line Office and Mamuni Mondal, 22, @ Puja both R/o New Pahar Gaon were intercepted at School Line Junction while they were carrying along with them 1.060 Kgs of illicit Ganja in an Auto Rickshaw. Acting on information obtained from them about the main drug trafficker, one A Raja, 29, Pvt. Bus Driver, R/o Sippighat was apprehended in Bhatubasti area and 1.205 Kgs of Ganja was seized from his possession.

All the five accused in the two cases have been sent to judicial custody by the Hon’ble Court. South Andaman Police is keeping a strict vigil over smuggling and proliferation of narcotics substance in these islands. Meanwhile strict watch over anti-social and illegal activities in the islands is also being maintained.

The general public has been requested to pass on any credible information on narcotics substances, illegal sale of liquor, gambling or any other illegal activity on the following telephone numbers: 233077, 232400, 232405, 100 and 9474282817, 9474290250, 9474228912, 9476076192 & 9434279416. It has been assured that the informant will be rewarded and his identity will be kept secret.

This is to bring to the notice for the information of the general public that Port Blair Municipal Council with the help of Police has sealed 02 buildings being constructed in violation of Building Bye Laws at South Point village on 15.03.2013. The said construction is being undertaken in CRZ-I restricted area in violation of Hon’ble Court’s Order dated 07.09.2004 which is wilful disobedience of the Hon’ble Court’s Order. The buildings are being constructed in gross violation of the norms of Building Bye Laws. 

Secretary, Port Blair Municipal Council has further stated that similar action will be taken whenever any unauthorized constructions are noticed and has advised the builders to follow the law in their own interest.
