In a fictitious housing society very close to where I live, many sounds come out of the complex: Harsh words, screams, fists connecting with fists, connecting with shin and groin, and four letter expletives that shock the residents of other colonies who live nearby.

But it was not always so.

Many, many years ago, people belonging to one religious community, decided that since they all worshipped together, they would be happy living together.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up in the morning, and shout Good Morning to you, Brother Jerome, rather than some other greeting like Namaskar or Namasthe!’

“Excellent!” shouted Mr Jerome, “So let’s put up our own building, where all of us will live together, and wake up in the morning and greet each other with ‘Good Mornings!”

The idea spread like wildfire within the community, and soon, all the ‘Good Morning’ greeting people shifted into the same building, and felt so good for a few days greeting each other with ‘Good Morning!’

“We need a committee to run this building!” they said to each other one day, after saying their good mornings!” And as soon as the date for elections to the committee was announced, strange happenings were noticed, “His good morning sounds different from the rest of us, so vote for me!” said Jerome.

“His good morning shows he is from a lower class!” said another.

“His good morning shows lack of education!” whispered another candidate.

And soon rumblings were heard withina building that had residents who had previously thought of themselves as identical in thought and belief and ‘good morning’ greetings!

After those same elections, which were bitterly fought by like-minded people, the sounds that echoed from the building were loud, rowdy and boisterous, till this morning, when I saw residents walking to the local real estate broker’s office, “Get us a flat in buildings, were people say namaste, namaskar and even good morning,” said the residents, “How silly we were to think that people of one kind could live happily together!”

“Any message you have for the people and prime minister of this country?” I asked them as they trouped out, broken, bruised and battered from their building.

“Yes!” said the spokesman and no it was not Mr Jerome but his missus, “Tell the people and its leaders that the only way to grow together, is by mixing our differences and enjoying a diversity of…”

“Good mornings..”

“Namastes..”

“Namaskars..”

“and Salaam Alaikums..!” they all shouted together..!

The Sentry at the Gate of Time, was worried. He had never seen such a crowd at the Gate of Time. Normally crowds welcomed the New Year with rejoicing and revelry, but as he looked at the gate, and saw the faces of the welcomers, he sniffed the smell of fear.

“Strange!” he muttered to his missus.

“Never smelt this smell before!” she said as she sniffed the air.

“Well, not there was never fear when the new year came in!” said the sentry, “I remember smelling a lot of fear, during the Crusades, during the World Wars, and even during the Cold War, but never like this!”

“It’s a different fear,” said his missus, “It’s fear between man and man!”

“Between friends, who are no longer friends, between colleagues, who have allowed distrust to creep in, between neighbours who now close their doors on one another!”

“It’s a sad fear!” said his missus.

The eyes of the Sentry swept the crowd, “There’s two men who have not come to greet the New Year!” he said.

“Yes, I know!” said his missus.

“You do, how?” asked the puzzled Sentry of the Gate of Time.

“Oh I didn’t want to bother you!” said his missus, “They both tried to scramble over the Fence of Time and meet the New Year in advance!”

“What!” shouted the Sentry.

“You were sleeping, dear husband, so I stopped them, one with a grey beard, and the other bald, and I saw they had a paper, which they wanted to hand over to 2020!”

“Did you confiscate the paper?”

“No, husband, but I saw what was written in it. It was a note for 2020, “Bring bandages and medicines with you because we are going to make you bloodied when you visit us!”

“Oh my! Oh my!” whispered the Sentry of the Gate of Time.

“Don’t fret, dear husband, don’t fret!” said his missus soothingly, “I think it was meant to be I saw those two and their dastardly paper!Because I have a plan to rescue the year! Do you remember what won all the wars before?”

“Yes!” said the Sentry, “But I have not seen her lately, where is she?”

“I am here,” said a woman, more beautiful than any woman they had ever seen, “I came as soon as your missus summoned me!”

“You will have to go down with the New Year. You will also be bloodied just like he is about to be, but stand strong, fight hard, and then maybe, just maybe, 2020 will not fall prey to the plans these two men have for him. Do you think you can do that?”

They watched as the incredibly beautiful woman, stood lone and tall, “I am Truth, “she whispered, “And Truth will always Prevail..!”

Sourav Ganguly’seighteen year old daughter, Sana, is said to have posted a message on Instagram, against the CAA. But loving father that he is, Sourav has said, that ‘she is too young a girl to know about Indian politics!’

And in that statement lies the snooty, snigger and smirks greeting the cries and protests of students all over India.

“You are children!”

“You are being manipulated!”

“You are too young to know about Indian politics!”

So, Dada, when did you start playing cricket for your state? When you were eighteen wasn’t it? Or have you forgotten? Did you understand the game? Or do think it was just a children’s game, of which now at the age of 47 you have become president off?

As I listened to student protestors from all over India, speaking out on TV, I realized, how intelligent, decisive and articulate they were.

And maybe that is what politicians, most of whom have, if at all, scraped through their schools or bluffed their degrees, need to know, that education gives you the power to analyze, to think, to probe into the deeper meaning of things, and to open up for scrutiny, lies, that the uneducated accept as gospel truth.

Also, it’s only in politics, even cricket politics, that seniority counts, whereas in todays corporate world, people like the forty seven year oldGanguly, would have been serving under a thirty or thirty five year old boss.“And he wouldn’t even call you Dada!”

“Would you call him ‘too young’MrGanguly?” I’m sure you wouldn’t, seasoned politician that you are.

So, also the politician, if he was working anywhere else other than the secure walls of Parliament, would have been like Sourav, serving under one of these youngsters.

These in colleges are not the vote banks of the country. Vote banks get swayed en masse. Like a herd of sheep, they follow blindly, trusting completely in rhetoric and scripts written for good actors.

Vote banks are what brings wrong men and women to power, while thinkers are those who can see beyond.

And yet, we call these the thinkers of India, naïve, ‘too young’ and impressionable?

What a laugh!

Wake up India! These socalled children you are firing upon, hurling tear gas onto and brandishing your lathis on are today’s generation!

They are ‘not too young’, they know more than you and I do.

It is not they, the educated who have been manipulated, it is we who have been.

If the father of Sana could play for his state at eighteen! If Sachin could have played for his country at even less, shouldn’t we stop thinking of them as ‘young’ and start thinking of them as ‘mature educated thinkers’ who are showing us, and here I quote Shakespeare, ‘that there is ‘something rotten in the state of Denmark..!’
