Port Blair, March 11: The Community Food and Nutrition Unit, Port Blair in association with ICDS Urban Project celebrated ‘International Women’s Day’ at Brijgunj Panchayat Hall today. The function was attended by Shri. Dinesh Ram, Up-Pradhan as the chief guest.

Dinesh Ram on the occasion spoke on the importance of Women’s Empowerment and equal status of women in the society while the Principal of Govt. Middle School, Brichgunj, Smti. Umadevi spoke about the importance of educating the girl child.

Speaking on the occasion CDPO Urban project Smti. Zarina Bibi elaborated on the schemes benefitting adolescent  girls and elderly women.  

Demonstration Officer of CFNEU Port Blair Smti.Suma Sreedharan spoke about the importance of the day and gave various health tips. A painting competition for adolescent girls and a quiz competition for mothers were organized by local CFNEU on this occasion. Prizes were later distributed to the winners.

The programme was attended by around 75 people of the area along with PRI members, ANM’s, Mukhya Sevikas and Aanganwadi workers.

Port Blair, March 11: The Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Papa Ray has raised the issue of Non- Payment of all dues of arrears to the 325 Home Guards of A & N Administration who were regularized in December 2009 as per the Supreme Court directives in the Parliament.

Replying to the issue raised by the MP, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Mullapally Ramachandran that the arrears to tune of Rs. 12.44 crores in respect of Basic Pay, Grade Pay, Dearness Allowance, School Clothing Allowance (SCA) and Washing Allowance have been paid to the Home Guards in April, 2010. As regards payment of Arrears in respect of HRA and Adhoc Bonus, the matter was examined in consultation with Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure and has been conveyed to the UT of A & N Administration.

Port Blair, March 11: Kumari Deborah has added another Bronze Medal for the country in the 33rd Asian Cycling Championship currently being held at New Delhi. She won a Bronze Medal in the 400 mtrs Time Trial pairing Kumari Manorama of Manipur today. This is her second Bronze Medal in the Championship.

Earlier, she won a Bronze Medal in 500 mtrs Individual Time Trial on the inaugural Day of the Championship. If all goes well, Deborah is expected to win another medal for the country in 200 mtrs Individual Sprint final of which for Gold and Silver is to be held today. Deborah has also reached the final of the 2000 mtrs Cretarian Four Team Pursuit for Bronze Medal.

Meanwhile, Shri Rakesh Bali, Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs and Shri Lucas Robert, Director (Sports) has congratulated Kumari Deborah for her commendable performance in an International Championship and for bringing laurels for the country and the U.T. of A & N Islands. They also wished her to win more medals in the reaming events.
